I read this book maybe...twenty years ago? As a young adult, at least, early teens, and I remember being very struck by the dark feel of the world building and the challenges faced by the heroine. (Helped, probably, by the v dramatic looking cover!) I do recall thinking the Darkangel was so unappealing, certainly not the object of any sort of romantic feelings (and my opinion of vampires hasn't improved). Still, the story isn't exactly a romance, and there is a feeling of tension, of waiting, of apprehension in the narrative. I never read the other two books in the series but was quite obsessed with this one for a long while. I'm going to have to read it again sometime soon.
